SSA has issued an urgent notice about Social Security and SSI payments that many Americans need to know about. This alert concerns a specific date in July, and that day is just around the corner.
Additionally, SSA has clarified who will receive that payment and what requirements they must meet. The next payment, already in August, also has a set date. According to SSA, payments are distributed based on each beneficiary's birth date.
SSA clarifies when they will pay millions of Americans: only hours left
This Wednesday, July 23, those born between the 21st and 31st of the month will receive their deposit. This is the last payment for July, which completes the month's three payment sessions. The other two were made on July 9 and 16 for those born between the 1st–10th and 11th–20th, respectively.
This notice from Social Security aims to remind Americans on Social Security and SSI to pay attention to this key date. Not everyone can receive this on July 23. Only those who meet certain requirements will do so.
Requirements to collect nearly $2,000 this July 23
They must have been born between the 21st and 31st of any month and receive Social Security benefits (SSD or retirement) or SSI. In the case of SSI, payments are always made on the first of each month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday. Those who receive both benefits and started collecting before May 1997 get the SSI payment on the first and the Social Security payment on the third.
Since January 2025, SSA applies a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase. The result: the average monthly payment for retirees is about $1,976 (1,976 USD) for individuals or $3,089 (3,089 USD) for couples. Those who receive SSI get an average of $967 (967 USD) for individuals and $1,450 (1,450 USD) for couples.
What will happen on August 1?
In August, Social Security payments will follow the same pattern for those born from the 21st to the 31st, but they fall on Wednesday, August 27. For those receiving SSI, the payment will be on August 1; if it falls on a weekend, it would be sent earlier, but this year that won't happen because it falls on a Friday.
SSA has also warned about other relevant issues. At the end of July, a withholding of up to 50% of payments will begin in cases of detected overpayments, a measure that affects many Americans, although it is possible to request exemptions if there are financial difficulties.
