Urgent notice to Dollar General customers in the United States: They must check this

A new safety notice could affect thousands of regular Dollar General shoppers across the United States

Dollar General customers across the country are receiving an important warning. The chain of stores, known for its low-priced products, has become embroiled in a concerning situation. Authorities have issued a clear message for those who have recently shopped at one of its locations.

A fraudulent device was found on one of its payment terminals, which could have put numerous users' banking information at risk. This device was designed to steal card data without the user noticing. According to local authorities, it is unknown how long it had been in place, so the potential victims could be many.

A hidden danger in card readers

The device found at Dollar General is known as a skimmer, a small device that blends into card readers. By inserting a card and entering the PIN, criminals manage to copy the customer's bank account data. Then, that information can be used to make unauthorized purchases or clone the card.

Sioux Falls police have warned that these devices can be operational for weeks without being detected. Even if the device is removed, thieves can keep the stolen data for months before using it. This makes it difficult for victims to associate the fraud with a specific purchase, according to The Sun.

Experts explain that skimmers are no longer exclusive to sophisticated criminal networks. Nowadays, they can be purchased for less than 100 euros in online stores. Their technology has become so advanced that many shoppers don't detect anything unusual when paying.

How to protect yourself with the three key steps

In the face of this threat, authorities recommend following the "three T's" rule: tug, touch, and track. By "tugging" on the reader before using it, you might notice if there's a fake piece fitted on top, "touching" allows you to identify loose or poorly placed parts. And "tracking" is frequently checking the status of your bank accounts for suspicious or fraudulent charges.

The devices usually fit perfectly over the original reader, mimicking its shape and color. Therefore, besides looking, it is advisable to manipulate them slightly to check if they are firmly fixed. If something seems unusual, it is recommended to notify store personnel and, if possible, call the police without touching the device.

It is also advised to use contactless payment methods when available. This system prevents the card from coming into direct contact with a compromised reader. If you see strange movements in your account after a purchase at Dollar General, contact your bank or card issuer immediately to prevent further losses.
