Mary of Denmark and King Frederik are leaving: they've made a mistake and there are consequences

Kings Mary and Frederik of Denmark make a serious mistake that will have consequences for their reign

The Danish monarchy is once again at the center of controversy. King Frederik and Mary of Denmark, who ascended to the throne just a year and a half ago, have once again made a controversial decision. Many believe that their behavior is irresponsible and far removed from the institutional commitmentexpected of heads of state.

Since July 6, the monarchs have been outside the country, in what would be another of their now frequent private trips. What is most concerning is not so much the getaway itself, but the secrecy surrounding it and the constant changes in the dates of their return.

Vacations without transparency

This is not the first time King Frederik and Mary have chosen to disappear from the public eye without prior notice. Since their proclamation in January 2024, they have taken several private trips that have drawn criticism for their lack of transparency. This new absence adds to that list, but what makes it especially controversial is the uncertainty about its duration.

Initially, the monarchs were expected to return on July 13 (13 de julio); however, that date was not met. Two days later, a new return was announced for the 15th (15 de julio), but that did not happen either. Finally, it has been reported that the couple will extend their stay abroad by five more days, although without providing any details.

Regency falls to the emerita

Meanwhile, the management of the kingdom has had to be left in the hands of Queen Margrethe. The mother of the current monarch has temporarily assumed the regency, since the crown prince, Christian, is also outside the country. This provisional solution has caused confusion in both national and international media.

From Germany, the outlet Bunte has described the situation as "institutional chaos." The simultaneous absence of the king and the heir has called into question the planning and responsibility of the royal family.

This unexpected return of Margrethe to the head of the Crown shows the disorganization within the Royal House. The absence of clear leadership fuels doubts about the stability and strength of Frederik and Mary's reign.

The consequences: citizen discontent grows and the debate on the current role of the monarchy reopens

The current situation is not an isolated incident, but part of a series of behaviors that are eroding the public image of the Danish monarchs. The couple have shown, on several occasions, their tendency to make decisions without informing in advance or considering the impact on public opinion. This lack of institutional sensitivity has been harshly questioned.

It has also not been clarified whether any of their four children are accompanying them. On other occasions, Isabella, Vincent, and Josephine have joined these trips, but this time there is no confirmation of their whereabouts. The absolute discretion surrounding the royal family has increased suspicions and fueled theories about possible internal conflicts.

The lack of communication has created an atmosphere of uncertainty among citizens. The Danish population, traditionally respectful of the institution, is beginning to show signs of weariness, which many describe as an evasive and unedifying attitude on the part of their monarchs.

A significant portion of the citizenry is demanding greater responsibility. The fact that the monarchs repeatedly choose the path of silence, and do so at institutionally delicate moments, generates distrust. The wear and tear is visible and, if this course of action continues, it could have deeper consequences for the Danish monarchy.
