Goodbye to this beloved U.S. chain: Massive and imminent store closures

The closure of this popular American chain leaves a void in the hearts of thousands of consumers across the country

This chain has been a reference for craft lovers for years. Its aisles filled with yarns, fabrics, threads, and creative materials welcomed thousands of people in search of inspiration. But now, this well-known chain faces a completely different future.

Joann has announced the definitive closure of all its remaining stores in the United States. After closing 255 establishments in April, it has begun the final liquidation of the more than 500 branches that were still standing. The company, based in Ohio, declared bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year and was acquired by GA Group, a firm specialized in liquidations.

Total Closure Throughout May

Since the beginning of the year, it was already expected that Joann would cease operations completely. Although the exact dates for each location have not been released, most are expected to close throughout May. On April 28, 112 stores closed their doors on the same day, marking one of the most visible steps in the process.

The news has left its most loyal clientele in shock, who considered these spaces as more than just stores. For decades, Joann was a meeting point for those who sew, knit, start businesses, or enjoy creating with their hands. With the closure, an important part of the "do-it-yourself" culture in the country also disappears.

In response to this situation, the company has implemented a support plan for its approximately 19,000 workers, according to Mundo Deportivo. This program includes job fairs and work flexibility so they can attend interviews, aiming to facilitate their transition to new jobs. It is an effort to reduce the human impact of this massive closure.

Online Sales Suspended and In-Store Discounts

As part of the final measures, Joann has also closed its online store. Since March 5, its website stopped accepting orders to prevent fraud related to fake sites impersonating its identity. In a statement published on social media, the company warned about this risk and asked its customers not to be deceived.

Many users hoped to take advantage of the discounts from home, but the company has been clear: all sales are conducted exclusively in the physical stores that are operational. There, discounts of up to 70% are offered on selected products while Joann's liquidation process lasts.

This unexpected closure marks the end of an era for thousands of people who grew up shopping at Joann. The disappearance of its stores represents a change in American retail, especially in a sector so tied to creativity and craftsmanship.
